Getting some Feedback and doing more editing...

Today in  our lesson we got some feedback from our teacher Phil and he told us his opinion about our rough cut. He told us that he felt our shots were happening to quick and that we needed to slow them down or make certain shots longer.  We decided we will work on this later.

At first I worked on adding in some transition effects to  make the editing more smoother and more interesting. I did this using Final Cut Pro. I added in the same effect throughout the film and it looked really good and flowed better.



As you can see I clicked on Effects at the top bar menu and then in the end chose the 'Cross Dissolve' effect

As I added in the cross dissolve effect in most of the shots this little speech bubble appeared (the ones I have circled in red) which symbolised that the effect has been added successfully


Phil and Mary looked at our rough cut again and told us how our film was quite confusing and that the drawings that are added in (the drawings that my little sister drew) did not match the drawings that the little girl Amy was drawing in the actual film. The image below may make it more clear what I mean...


As you can see on the left, these are the drawings that we added into our film (separately) as the film will keep cutting back and forth to these pictures and our titles will run over them (as a descreet title sequence). However, our teachers opinion was that those images did not match the image on the right side as it was drawn using black and red marker pens and does not even look like it was drawn by the same person (as both drawings are supposed to look like it was drawn by Amy). In the film, Amy is using a black marker pen to draw, however the drawings that our titles will run over are in colour pencils and crayon... so we sort of realised they didn't really match and the audience may be confused.

We then decided to cut out the last shot all together (the shot of the image on the right which basically reveals the horrible image that Amy has drawn) as we thought it looked a bit ridiculous. We then decided to change things around a bit. Since we gained some inspiration from the opening sequence Sherlock Holmes, we decided to use their idea and incorporate it into our film. Instead of cutting back to the drawings that my little sister drew for us, we will draw a rough image (using a black marker pen so it matches the fact that Amy is drawing using the same pen in the film) which will foreshadow what the next shot will show. For example if the next shot will show Amy sitting on the stairs playing with the doll, then  before this shot appears there will be a picture drawn in black marker pen of her playing with a doll before it actually cuts in to the real shot of her doing this.... We decided this will be better and look more interesting our teachers agreed too and said that it will make much more sense! Below is the Sherlock Holmes opening sequence so that what I have explained is clear...
